Taste of Abra: Abal-abal
A combination of sour, salty and garlicky taste coupled with chewy, mushy texture that makes anyone cringe, kinirog nga abal-abal (pan-fried June beetles/May beetles) are always an exotic treat at the onset of rainy season here in Abra.
You'd know these edible insects are already available in Bangued when you could see a lot of vendors in front of what used to be a store of Fairway's lumber and hardware along Santiago street.
And the best and fun part especially when you catch them alive from kalapogan (sandy beaches and banks along the rivers) is that you can play banga-banga (two beetles tied on a thread flying around in circles mimicking the shape of a banga or claypot) just before you cook them!
